‘Best Tourism Village’ title given to a village in Meghalaya

Kongthong village in Meghalaya is also known as the 'Whistling Village'.

A village by the name Kongthong village in the state of Meghalaya is also popularly known as the ‘Whistling Village’. The Ministry of Tourism has nominated Kongthon Village as the ‘Best tourism village’. The title is shared by two other villages in India. The two villages are the Pochampally village in Telangana and the Ladhpura Khas village in Madhya Pradesh.

One very unique thing about the villages in Kongthong village is that all villagers have a second name which is a ‘song name’. There is a tune for every person and that tune is whistled to call upon that person.

Apart from that, Kongthong village has a population of around 700 people. This village is in process of getting tagged by UNESCO. The government is working towards promoting this village and its culture to the world. The government has announced the development of the tourism infrastructure for this village.
