After the resumption of many tourism-related activities in different states of India such as Rajasthan and Kerala, Varanasi has finally started their boat services. After 3 months of lockdown, people can now take a boat ride across the Ganga river in Varanasi.

Many boatmen were happy to finally start earning again. During the lockdown, many boatmen were struggling financially and suffered heavily because of the closure of the boating services. A huge number of the city’s population is dependent on income earned through the boating services. This is a great sign of relief for the families of the boatmen.

The boatmen are currently required to register themselves with the Municipal Corporation in order to resume their services. This is to keep track of all the people currently operating the services and would later help the officials in contact-tracing in case of any infection.

The number of coronavirus cases in India has increased sharply after the lifting of the lockdown. Currently, the total number of deaths is over 14,400. The state of Uttar Pradesh reported a total of 18,893 COVID cases and 588 deaths until now.

The following YouTube video from the channel called “Amazing Places On Our Planet” shows the diversity of the Varanasi city in all its colours.
