According to the recent announcement made by the Indian Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, 5 lakh tourist visas will be issued for free once the travel restrictions are lifted. This announcement was made by the minister to help recover the ailing Tourism sector of India.
However, international flights are still banned and many restrictions are still in place for the tourists who wish to visit India. Once these restrictions are lifted, the recovery of the tourism industry can be expected.
The Finance minister also said that easy loans will be provided for the travel agents and the tour guides who wish to restart their failed businesses. It is, however, not known if these measures will be enough to jumpstart the tourism businesses. But, simply lifting up the restrictions can prove to be beneficial for the tourism economy.
India has seen tremendous growth through the revenue earned by the tourism sector before the Covid pandemic. The lockdown has proven to be a curse for people who have completely failed in their business ventures related to tourism.
With the third wave expected in the coming 2-3 months, it is highly likely that the international tourists will try to avoid India. Also, another reason for the late recovery of international tourism is the huge loss of jobs in the international market. In order to travel, people usually save money and that can only be expected once the regular jobs return back to the people.
Only time will tell how effective these measures will be in terms of the recovery of the Indian tourism industry. On the other hand, domestic tourism has already started a steady rise after the new Covid cases have declined significantly.
