This popular tourist destination is famous for its magnificent caves and the water bodies where the crocodiles are the centre of attraction.

This sanctuary is located in the Shivaram village and it is known to be the only Crocodile Sanctuary in the state of Telangana. The locals believe that the crocodiles have settled in this area for many decades. According to the historians, there are clay structures and bricks that are known to be from a historical period in the state known as the ‘Satavahana’ period.

The Shivaram Crocodile Sanctuary was first established in the year 1978. There are approximately 60 freshwater crocodiles that have settled in this sanctuary. The areas surrounding the sanctuary is rich in bio-diversity and it provides the ideal climate for the habitat of the crocodiles.

The local government has announced that the sanctuary will be provided with the new infrastructure for the tourists. The sanctuary will receive significant funding to build it for the purpose of tourism. According to the new infrastructure plan, the sanctuary will be well connected to the other important sites where the tourists can easily travel to. According to government officials, the Crocodile sanctuary will turn out to be a very important tourism site for the state of Telangana.

The new facilities that are proposed would include the building of cottages, boating facilities, camping, cycling, and a building of a hanging bridge. All these developments are with the intent to increase the tourism-based revenue from the state.

The sanctuary also inhabits many species of herbivores such as Otters, Wild Boars, and Wild Cats. The area is rich in its bio-diversity and it includes some rare species of trees as well. Some of these trees include Strychnos potatorum, Wrightia tinctoria, and Combretaceae among many others.

The site is also significant from the historical perspective. Many historical discoveries point to the era of Kings going back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. Various temples and caves in the area are historically significant with many sculptures that can be found in the area. It is also known that the Buddhist monks in the old times settled in the caves and studied their religion and spread their teachings in India.
