The lowest temperature in the country (minus 10.8°C) was recently recorded at the Drass town in Kargil. The clear skies are pleasurable to eyes and considered a gift from nature. But who knew they could start a cold wave in Kashmir and Ladakh. The minimum temperatures dropped below the freezing point in Srinagar and other surrounding valleys.
The last two days have a little relief from the freezing nights in Ladakh and Kashmir. But, the relief was short-lived and the temperature fell again below the freezing point. Being said that, Drass remained the coldest in the country while Mercury in Kashmir and Ladakh once again dropped to below freezing point.
The mercury in Srinagar was recorded at minus 1.3°C, which is below the freezing point. This temperature was recorded by the meteorological department of Kashmir. The famous tourist resort, Pahalgam in J&K recorded minus 3.3°C, the coldest in the city. The minimum temperature recorded in South Kashmir was minus 1.2°C and minus 0.6°C was recorded in Kokernag.
The world’s favorite ski resort in Gulmarg recorded minus 1.8°C. Kupwara logged minus 1.9°C in North Kashmir. In UT Ladakh, Leh recorded minus 7.5°C. As predicted by the MET the cold wave will stay for a while as there will be no snowfall till the first week of the next month according to the weather forecast. The temperature can drop down even more due to the dry cold in the coming days in Kashmir and Ladakh UT.
