Winter tourist activities suspended in Ladakh due to Omicron threat

In the last week, there has been a significant increase in the number of Omicron cases.

The administration of Ladakh has to take a step to cancel all the prominent winter tourist activities. This also included the very popular Chadar Trek. This had to be done keeping in mind the rising Omicron cases in the country. The new COVID-19 variant, less likely to be deadly but is more contagious. Therefore, the government of Ladakh doesn’t want to take any risk as it’s a matter of the safety of tourists as well as travelers.

Adventurers love the popular adventure trek named Chadar Trek. The long 105 km trek ends up to the frozen Zanskar River. Another popular activity that got canceled this year is The snow leopard sighting expedition is another crazy and super adventurous activity that got canceled this year. This very activity was started to promote tourism in the Rupshu Valley in Leh.

But the fact is that it was officially announced by the deputy commissioner Leh Shrikant Suse on Twitter for the suspension of ChadarTrek 2022, snow leopard sighting expedition, and other winter activities in the district.

The super famous and gorgeous apricot blossom festival that gets organized in Kargil District during the January-February period was also canceled due to the Omicron Variant.

The 2020 lockdown and the border spat with China gave a major hit to tourism in locals who are mostly dependent on the summer tourist season for income. So, let’s see how this new variant affects the tourism industry of Ladakh.
